What a refrigerated dryer actually does
Air leaving a compressor is hot and carries water vapor. As it cools in the piping, that vapor condenses into liquid water, which ends up in tools, spray guns, and process lines. A refrigerated dryer chills the compressed air so the moisture condenses inside the dryer, where it is separated and drained, then typically reheats the air slightly before it goes downstream.
The result is air with a lower pressure dew point, meaning water is far less likely to condense in the downstream piping under normal shop temperatures. Refrigerated dryers are not designed for applications that need extremely dry air below freezing; those usually call for a different dryer technology.
Compare in this order
- Documented capacity, and the exact conditions it was rated at.
- Your real demand: the compressor's delivered airflow, operating pressure, and the hottest inlet and ambient temperatures you expect.
- Maximum working pressure versus your system pressure.
- Electrical supply: voltage, phase, frequency, and the circuit available.
- Physical fit: footprint, ventilation clearance, connection sizes, and drain routing.
- Documentation, warranty terms, the seller, and parts support.
Why the order matters
It is easy to start with price or brand and work backwards. That tends to produce a dryer that is either undersized for a hot summer afternoon or oversized for a modest workshop. Starting with documented capacity at realistic conditions narrows the field honestly, and the remaining checks separate dryers that fit your building from ones that only fit on paper.
What not to rely on
- Compressor horsepower alone. Delivered airflow varies widely between compressors of the same horsepower.
- Model numbers. A number in the model name is not a published capacity rating.
- Listing titles. Marketplace titles are written by sellers and can be incomplete or inaccurate. Check the manufacturer's datasheet.
